6th graders learned about the hand building techniques related to vessel construction. When waiting for the kiln, I had the students research different vessels. It was more a direct instruction related project but students were able to gain an understanding of the history of clay and what a variety of designs are made using the universal material.
Nick Cave Inspired Sound Monsters!
After-School run program at Boys & Girls Club I co-created a lesson for elementary students in grades K-2nd. We incorporated movement breaks and discussed the movement and sound that contemporary artist Nick Cave creates with his sound suits. Students made their own unique monster boxes with a variety of materials, and adding beads inside them to create sound!
Surrealism Exquisite Corpse Sculptures
5th grade students learned about the art movement Surrealism. I first gave them the drawing prompt of putting 2 things that don't normally go together. This helped them come up with ideas for their group exquisite corpse drawings, which they then turned into three-dimensional cubes for the final project.
